Hikers that forgo the Little Beehive will catch some great waterfall views before arriving at Lake Agnes and the tea house. Mirror Lake can be seen through the trees below as well as the Big Beehive cliff overhead. The trail begins at the far end of Lake Agnes and continues up a series of switchbacks to a junction on the Beehive Summit Ridge. It will take another 5 minutes to hike eastward along the ridge to the gazebo shelter. Family-friendly, this trail will take you around to the far end of Lake Agnes.

The Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House is also a popular hiking destination. This tea house is found on the Plain of Six Glaciers hiking trail, and is one of the best hikes in the Lake Louise area. The trail runs to the right of the lake from the tea house, following the shore all the way to the end of the lake and along the back side before it starts ascending. The hike up is spectacular, with views over Lake Agnes and across to the mountains. The trail is steeper than the hike to Lake Agnes, so be prepared for a grunt.
The view from here is spectacular, with vistas that encompass the lake, the mountains that tower over the lake, and out to the runs of Lake Louise ski resort in the distance. Along the shore near the tea house is a small bridge with a lovely vista across the lake. If you don't want to go back down the same way you came, you can cross the bridge, and the trail from here goes down and joins up with the main trail at Mirror Lake. This is a steeper section, but does shave off a bit of distance. By mountain standards, this is an easy trail, although it's rated as moderate due to the elevation. If you aren't used to hiking in the mountains, you may find it more difficult than expected simply because of the altitude.

Sadly, the whitebark pine tree is endangered, so please don’t touch and definitely don’t carve anything into the trunk. You don’t have to be an experienced mountaineer to enjoy the Canadian Rockies. If you have the energy, we definitely recommend hiking to one or both of the Beehives! These are the towering rocky structures above Lake Louise. We chose to make the hike just to the Big Beehive since we had other activities planned at Moraine Lake. This well-maintained trail leads up through the forest, offering good views of Lake Louise below. As they climb, hikers will have the chance to admire two other magnificent mountain lakes, Mirror Lake and Lake Agnes.
What to Bring for Hiking Lake Agnes Trail
You’ll be able to see the Chateau Lake Louise hotel and across the valley to the Lake Louise ski resort. Once you’ve had your fill of Lake Agnes waterfall pictures, your final task is to climb 57 stairs. At the top, you’ll be greeted by the Lake Agnes Tea House, and the iconic Lake Agnes just beyond. You’ll arrive at Mirror Lake after 2.9 km of hiking the Lake Agnes trail.
The hike to the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House is about 11 kilometers return and has an elevation gain of approximately 360 meters. From here, it's only another 800 meters to Lake Agnes, but tired souls sometimes turn around here if they aren't up for completing the hike. Once you've come this far, it's definitely worth pushing on to the Lake Agnes Tea House. The good news is, after you hike up, you can stop and enjoy a snack at the Lake Agnes Tea House and soak in the alpine scenery. Afterwards, you can linger around the lake, tack on a hike up to the Big Beehive if you have more energy, and then meander back down to Lake Louise.
In addition, if you add on the Big Beehive hike or the Little Beehive hike, you’ll be treated to a decent amount of golden larch trees, especially on the former. If you are visiting Banff with kids, this is an excellent hike for the entire family. It may be challenging for some kids, with the consistent climb, but it’s well worth it to make it to the top.
The lake reaches a surprising depth of more than 220 feet (70 meters). Once you’re on the Lake Louise shoreline, walk along the Lakeshore Trail on the the north side of the lake until the path forks. The upper/right fork is the start of the trail to the Lake Agnes Tea House. I strongly recommend purchasing the Parks Canada Discovery Pass, which gives access to all of Canada's national parks. In high season, arrive early, or you will spend a lot of time trying to find a space.
